Stay Catalonia: The Spanish Wine Region That Wants To Leave Spain
Is Catalonia the California of Spain? Both places have a fair share of residents who think they’d be better off if they seceded from their country. Both places contribute disproportionally to their country’s GDP. And both places make a lot of wine.
The secessionists in Catalonia (where there are presumably more per capita than in California) have a stronger argument for leaving, as the region is already semi-autonomous and has a distinct history dating back almost 1,000 years. They have their own language, parliament, flag, and anthem. They also have a thriving and unique wine scene. Catalonia is the birthplace of the sparkling wine Cava, where top producers are creating bubbles that can rival the best Champagnes. It is also home to the powerful red wines of Priorat, which give the top reds of Rioja a run for their money in terms of quality as well as cost.
Catalonians, we know you’d probably be just fine on your own. But if you’re reading this (and who’s to say you aren’t), we think you ought to stick with Spain.
