We Want The Franc, Give Up The Franc: The Fathergrape Connection
Dr. Dre has nearly 10 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Snoop Dogg has over 14 million. Meanwhile, George Clinton’s undeniably excellent band Parliament (originators of P-Funk, spiritual grandfathers to G-Funk) has just barely over a million. With all due respect to Dre and Snoop, they simply wouldn’t exist as we know them without the influence exerted by George Clinton. Put another way, Dre and Snoop are tremendously popular but George Clinton is in their blood, an inextricable part of their DNA.
Sound like any wine grapes you know?
DNA analysis done in the 1990s revealed that Cabernet Franc is the father of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. We Americans drink boatloads of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot every year. Cabernet Franc? Not so much. But why? At its best, Cab Franc combines the strength and sinew of Cabernet Sauvignon with the subtlety and aromatic finesse expected of Pinot Noir. It’s in the Goldilocks zone of deliciousness. High time then for us to tear the roof off and take a hard look at this underappreciated grape. And bust out some Parliament records while we do it (Aqua Boogie to be played twice, minimum).
